Simmered

Fahrenheit: 176°

Bio-Based Materials, Welding & Metal Working

Today, materials are primarily viewed through a functional, performance- driven lens, rather than an emotional one. Bio-based processes can help us reconnect with materials, encouraging mindful use, repair, and disposal.

Simmered 176°F is a customizable lamp-making kit that introduces bio-based materials to the home. This kit includes a material cookbook and series of four lamp frames.

Four customizable lighting fixtures that allow for bio-based material experimentation.

Algae & Coffee Bio-Based Materials

Initial Ideation

I considered bio-based materials in many forms, tensions, and diffusion methods as lamp shades. One of my favorite parts of the process, was imagining just how many scenarios that the bio-based materials could exist.

Physical prototyping later showed me that my bio-based materials were best when they were given minimal frames that embraced both the customization and the natural floppiness of the material. Even so, I enjoy looking back at these.

Environmental sustainability can be two-fold. Steel lighting fixtures offer durability and longevity, while agar and coffee lamp shades offer circularity and compostability.

Beyond this collection, I hope to have simple conversations about consumption and sustainable material practices. Even a small shift in awareness or perspective would be meaningful to me.
